We recommend that you visit the Regional Historical Museum "Stoyu Shishkov", as well as the town Planetarium, which is the largest one in Bulgaria with an astronomical activity. For the period of its operation it has been visited by over 2 650 000 people, thus turning it into one of the most visited sites in the town. A central place in the astronomical center is for the round star hall with a diameter of 12.5 m. The projector in the middle of the hall recreates a copy of the true sky onto the domed ceiling of the premises. The device is a brilliant combination of optics and mechanics, which allows for the precise reproduction of the Solar System, its objects and phenomena. The hall offers an opportunity for 150 people to enjoy for an hour and a half and to learn more about the stars and astronomical phenomena.
The Art Gallery in Smolyan was established in 1964. The same year was also the opening year for its very first exposition. In 1983 in moved to the new, specially designed building, which has an exposition area of 1000 m2, fund depositories, work premises, and a conservation and restoration atelier.
The Regional Library "Nikolay Vranchev" was established in 1959.
The building of the Rhodopi Drama Theatre was built in 1984. With its scales and architecture it is unique for the territory of the country. It has been rated Top 20 Best Buildings of the Century in a Classification of the Union Of Architects In Bulgaria.

And last but not least – the Municipality of Smolyan may also praise its rich cultural calendar. Holidays, festivals, fairs and musical events are organized throughout the entire year, as the summer months are the richest in events.
Landmarks Near Smolyan
Uhlovitsa Cave is one of the most beautiful and well-laid out caves in the Rhodopi Mountains. It rises high above the left shore of Arda River, near the small village of the same name. The seven little crystal sinter lakes are a beautiful end of the route is the route, as they are filled with water early in the spring. Stone jets of a beautiful waterfall fall down to the big lake.
Snezhanka Peak is one of the most favourable destinations of the Bulgarian skiers. It sets the beginning of over 35 marked ski tracks, which descend from one of the most attractive winter resorts in Bulgaria – Pamporovo Winter Resort. It is situated in the heart of the Rhodopi Mountain, at a distance of 15km from Smolyan. The biggest attraction of Snezhanka Peak is the TV Tower (156m). From its peak rising at a height of over 2000m it reveals panorama views to Rila Mountain, Pirin Mountain, and Stara Planina Mountain.
Shiroka Laka Architectural Preserve is situated at a distance of 23 km to the north-west of the town of Smolyan and at a distance of 16 km from Pamporovo Winter Resort, as it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the region. The village has preserved its architecture from the Bulgarian national revival period, musical culture, beautiful nature and rich history, as well as its folklore in its authentic form. It was here where in 1972 the National School For Folklore Arts was found.
Besides Pamporovo Winter Resort, in the proximity of Smolyan, there are the Smolyan Lakes also known as the "emerald eyes of the Rhodopi Mountain".
The village of Momchilovtsi is situated at a distance of 10 km to the north of Smolyan, which turns into an attractive tourist center with its nice soft climate, unique architecture, enchanting nature and a number of small and cosy family hotels.
"Momchilova Krepost" (Momchil's Fortress) – A fortress is situated on a high and rocky peak, at an altitude of 1215 m, near the village of Gradat. The Fortress and the Visitor's Center are both serviced by guides. In the spring-summer season an audio-visual outdoor spectacle is projects on top of the Fortress – a film about the life and achievements of Momchil Yunak (Momchil The Hero). Besides the spectacle, there is also another interesting attraction – a blacksmith's press, which provides all visitors with the opportunity to mould themselves a coin as a memory for your visit here.
"ROZHEN" National Astronomical Observatory – "Rozhen" National Astronomical Observatory is situated at an altitude of 1750 m and at a distance of 14 km to the south-east of the town of Chepelare. The Observatory is one of the five largest European observatory complexes.
Kaleto – a passage cave located near the village of Koshnitsa, which is one of the natural phenomena in this region.It represents a huge rock vault leading to a peak, where remains from the old fortress of the same name are situated. Here you may embark on one of the adrenaline activities offered – Alpine Swing (pendulum). After putting on a special outfit, you will swing at a height of over 40 m just like a pendulum of a big wall clock, and below your feet you will see a view to the valley of Arda River.
Kaleto Fortress – village of Koshnitsa, which is situated above the passage cave -Fortress is situated on a cone marble peak at an altitude of 1006 m.
Smolyan Waterfall – it rises to a height of 20 m. The direction is the village of Mugla and the Canyon of Waterfalls.
Pamporovo Velopark – The Velopark offers plenty of tracks of various levels of difficulty and purpose, such as specialized descending tracks, beginner tracks, family routes, training and skill improvement tracks, as well as the only specialized four-cross (4X) route in Bulgaria.
«Sveti Vissarion Smolenski» Cathedral – As regards it size and grandeur, the Church is one of the most significant churches in the country along with "Sveti Aleksandar Nevski" Cathedral in Sofia.
