Smolyan is situated in Central South Bulgaria in the most picturesque part of the Rhodopi Mountains, in the narrow valley of Cherna River. It is situated at a distance of 260 km to the south-east of Sofia, 103 km to the south of Plovdiv, and only 16 km to the south of the winter resort Pamporovo. Smolyan is is one of the longest towns in Bulgaria – nearly 25 km. As at December 2019 the town had a population of 27 092 citizens.

The town of Smolyan is an administrative, cultural-educational, municipal and regional center.

The town is the head office of companies working in the technical and servicing field. The investments in the town have been marking a good-rate growth. Smolyan is an important trade and tourist center in Central South Bulgaria and has a leading place in the regional economy. Services are a leading sector in the municipal economy, followed by the industry and agrarian sectors.
In addition, the wood industry and wood processing industry are also well-developed here, as well as cable and conductor production, instrumental equipment, high-polymer articles and garden furniture, metal-cutting machinery, as well as production of plastic articles and details for the automobile industry.

The town of Smolyan is an administrative, cultural-educational, municipal and regional center.

The town of Smolyan is a well-established center of training of personnel of secondary and higher education.

On the territory of the town there are 8 kindergartens and 8 municipal schools.
Three professional high schools and two professional schools of arts offer training for acquisition of an occupation. The academic youth is covered by a Branch and the Faculty of Physics and Technology at "Paisii Hilendarski" Plovdiv University, as well as at a Branch of "Chernorizets Hrabar" Free Varna University.
The monthly kindergarten fee amounts to BGN 44.

Healthcare is represented here by the Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment "Dr. Bratan Shukerov" AD, a regional dispensary for mental diseases with a hospital and a number of medical centers. On the territory of the Municipality of Smolyan there are also opened and operating 20 healthcare consulting rooms, 10 of which are a part of the children's institutions and 10 of which are a part of the schools. There are 5 medical centers and 2 medical diagnostic laboratories. Chinara. One of the natural landmarks of Smolyan is the Century-old tree – Chinar (Plantatus orientalis – Oriental Plane), which is nearly 300 years old. It was transferred back in 1720 from the White Sea and planted in the "old center" of Smolyan. The Century-old tree is a part of an enchanting ensemble consisting of a mosque and a Christian church.
"Amzovo" Preserve is situated on the territory of the town Smolyan, at a distance of 1 km to the south-east of Stanevska Mahala (Stanev's District). It has been proclaimed a deposit preserve number 1 in Bulgaria. Though small, this well-maintained preserve is of great importance for the biological diversity. "Amzovo" Forest Park is built close to it.

There are great camping and fishing opportunities here, as the three highest lakes are connected to an Ecopath. Smolyan has two bus stations– "Smolyan Bus Station" situated in the central urban part, and "Iztok Bus Station" situated in Ustovo Quarter. There are regular bus lines maintained to Plovdiv, Sofia, Kardzhali and many towns in the region, and in the summer season there is also a regular bus line maintained to Sunny Beach.
The urban transport is serviced by three companies, as there are 6 bus lines. The monthly subscription card amounts to BGN 50.
There are also interurban bus lines to the villages within the Municipality of Smolyan.

There are fifteen sports clubs in the town operating in the following sports: football, volleyball, weightlifting, skiing, orientation, snowboarding, swimming, dancesport, table tennis, court tennis, grass hockey, and karate.
The favorable climatic conditions allow for the development of different sports and the year-long holding of training camps by the sports clubs inside the country. The proximity of the Resort Complex Pamporovo provides all fans of winter sports with the opportunity to practice them.
Since 2012 there is also a specialized park for mountain biking operating on the territory of Resort Complex Pamporovo, as today it is the biggest one on the Balkans. Pamporovo Velopark hosts annual international competitions of the highest class, and in 2013the Resort was the host of an European Competition in Descending and 4Х, the Balkan Championship in the European discipline of cross-country and a Round of the World 4Х Series "4X Pro Tour" in 2014. Mechi Chal Zone is also open, and therefore the Velopark has over 50 km tracks and routes intended for mountain biking for people of all ages and for people possessing various skills.
The town has a modern sports and technical base, which consists of a completely renovated sports hall, a swimming pool, multi-functional sports grounds, two stadiums and tennis courts.

We recommend that you visit the Regional Historical Museum "Stoyu Shishkov", as well as the town Planetarium, which is the largest one in Bulgaria with an astronomical activity. For the period of its operation it has been visited by over 2 650 000 people, thus turning it into one of the most visited sites in the town. A central place in the astronomical center is for the round star hall with a diameter of 12.5 m. The projector in the middle of the hall recreates a copy of the true sky onto the domed ceiling of the premises. The device is a brilliant combination of optics and mechanics, which allows for the precise reproduction of the Solar System, its objects and phenomena. The hall offers an opportunity for 150 people to enjoy for an hour and a half and to learn more about the stars and astronomical phenomena.
The Art Gallery in Smolyan was established in 1964. The same year was also the opening year for its very first exposition. In 1983 in moved to the new, specially designed building, which has an exposition area of 1000 m2, fund depositories, work premises, and a conservation and restoration atelier.

The Regional Library "Nikolay Vranchev" was established in 1959.

The building of the Rhodopi Drama Theatre was built in 1984. With its scales and architecture it is unique for the territory of the country. It has been rated Top 20 Best Buildings of the Century in a Classification of the Union Of Architects In Bulgaria.

The intangible cultural heritage in the Municipality is represented by the folk traditions, folklore and customs. And last but not least – the Municipality of Smolyan may also praise its rich cultural calendar. Holidays, festivals, fairs and musical events are organized throughout the entire year, as the summer months are the richest in events.

Landmarks Near Smolyan

Uhlovitsa Cave is one of the most beautiful and well-laid out caves in the Rhodopi Mountains. It rises high above the left shore of Arda River, near the small village of the same name. The seven little crystal sinter lakes are a beautiful end of the route is the route, as they are filled with water early in the spring. Stone jets of a beautiful waterfall fall down to the big lake.
Snezhanka Peak is one of the most favourable destinations of the Bulgarian skiers. It sets the beginning of over 35 marked ski tracks, which descend from one of the most attractive winter resorts in Bulgaria – Pamporovo Winter Resort. It is situated in the heart of the Rhodopi Mountain, at a distance of 15km from Smolyan. The biggest attraction of Snezhanka Peak is the TV Tower (156m). From its peak rising at a height of over 2000m it reveals panorama views to Rila Mountain, Pirin Mountain, and Stara Planina Mountain.
Shiroka Laka Architectural Preserve is situated at a distance of 23 km to the north-west of the town of Smolyan and at a distance of 16 km from Pamporovo Winter Resort, as it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the region. The village has preserved its architecture from the Bulgarian national revival period, musical culture, beautiful nature and rich history, as well as its folklore in its authentic form. It was here where in 1972 the National School For Folklore Arts was found.
Besides Pamporovo Winter Resort, in the proximity of Smolyan, there are the Smolyan Lakes also known as the "emerald eyes of the Rhodopi Mountain".
The village of Momchilovtsi is situated at a distance of 10 km to the north of Smolyan, which turns into an attractive tourist center with its nice soft climate, unique architecture, enchanting nature and a number of small and cosy family hotels.
"Momchilova Krepost" (Momchil's Fortress) – A fortress is situated on a high and rocky peak, at an altitude of 1215 m, near the village of Gradat. The Fortress and the Visitor's Center are both serviced by guides. In the spring-summer season an audio-visual outdoor spectacle is projects on top of the Fortress – a film about the life and achievements of Momchil Yunak (Momchil The Hero). Besides the spectacle, there is also another interesting attraction – a blacksmith's press, which provides all visitors with the opportunity to mould themselves a coin as a memory for your visit here.
"ROZHEN" National Astronomical Observatory – "Rozhen" National Astronomical Observatory is situated at an altitude of 1750 m and at a distance of 14 km to the south-east of the town of Chepelare. The Observatory is one of the five largest European observatory complexes.
Kaleto – a passage cave located near the village of Koshnitsa, which is one of the natural phenomena in this region.It represents a huge rock vault leading to a peak, where remains from the old fortress of the same name are situated. Here you may embark on one of the adrenaline activities offered – Alpine Swing (pendulum). After putting on a special outfit, you will swing at a height of over 40 m just like a pendulum of a big wall clock, and below your feet you will see a view to the valley of Arda River.
Kaleto Fortress – village of Koshnitsa, which is situated above the passage cave -Fortress is situated on a cone marble peak at an altitude of 1006 m.
Smolyan Waterfall – it rises to a height of 20 m. The direction is the village of Mugla and the Canyon of Waterfalls.
Pamporovo Velopark – The Velopark offers plenty of tracks of various levels of difficulty and purpose, such as specialized descending tracks, beginner tracks, family routes, training and skill improvement tracks, as well as the only specialized four-cross (4X) route in Bulgaria.

«Sveti Vissarion Smolenski» Cathedral – As regards it size and grandeur, the Church is one of the most significant churches in the country along with "Sveti Aleksandar Nevski" Cathedral in Sofia.
